The truck, which was originally my grandfather's, then passed on to my dad, sat in our backyard for as long as I can remember. I always dreamed of driving it one day. When my dad passed away, and I was old enough to start working on it, the process began. Well first off, I'm not the greatest writer. English was my worse subject in school. But I wanted to share the experience of restoring my dad's truck. It sat in our backyard for as long as I can remember and I always dreamed of one day being able to drive it.

However, I am the worst at keeping this up to date. But other factors contribute to the long breaks between posts. For example, it's too cold to actually do any work in the winter months, and ridiculously hot to be sitting in the garage in the summer when you have weeks and weeks of 90 - 100 degree days. So spring and fall are the best, but then there's only so much work you can get done when you're still saving money for parts. But since my last post (just about a whole year ago) I was able to save up enough to get the front brake kit and front suspension! We also completely finished prepping and painting the front end of the frame with POR15.

More recently we attempted to start putting the suspension and brake kit together, but like any major project you're going to run into some bumps in the road. For us last weekend it was first the new lower A-Arm shaft was too small. Granted, these were free and we did not know at the time they were not compatible. Good news from this is the old shafts were still in great condition, they just needed a little cleaning. We'll be replacing the rubber seals though. Next issue came about when laying out all the parts for the brake kit and suspension assembly. We realized nuts and bolts did not come with the shocks. It was simple enough to fix by going up to Napa Auto Parts a couple times to get the correct size bolts. Out day in the garage was a bit successful though. We were able to attached the rubber bumpers and ball joints to both lower A-Arms. And with one more parts order on its way we will soon have everything needed to put the brake kit and suspension together (hopefully). Fingers crossed. We picked up an engine hoist from a local equipment rental and loaded up the old engine into the trailer. Not before emptying the oil pan though because the recycling place won't take any parts with fluid still in them. Mind you, the oil has been sitting for 25+ years. Simply taking out the oil pan plug wouldn't do. Oil dripped out for a couple seconds then stopped. We knew there had to be more than that. So we unscrewed the oil pan, which was a lot easier than I was expecting. Gave it quite a few bangs with the mallet hammer to loosen it and the oil pan came free. What we discovered looked like black, gooey, slimy sludge. It was gross.

We also threw out the transmission, the whole front in (front crossmember, breaks, torsion bars, a-arms) and a few other metal parts. We took the whole trailer load to TKO Recycling (Rancho Cordova, CA). They will recycle just about anything.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13004960886036871295noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6077543663178858646.post-7631509522732992782015-07-14T11:13:00.000-07:002015-07-14T11:13:53.742-07:00Gettin down to the nitty grittySo it's been about 7 months since I've been able to get some time to work on the truck. This weekend was very successful though! Since we've got the whole front half of the truck down to the frame, it was time to start cleaning and polishing it up. And let me tell you...it looked a lot worse. With the right tools (thanks to my friend and neighbor) it took no time at all. Of course, it's hard to get into all of the nooks and crannies, but that's later. There's still some spots to finish but in two evenings we got a lot cleaned up.

I went back and forth and back and forth and back again between cleaning it by hand or taking the whole thing to a shop to media blast it. We settled on doing it by hand, which isn't awful! It's been fun actually. I'm learning how to use tools I've never used before. I may or may not invest in my own pressurized abrasive blaster to get into the tight places and crevices. We'll see.

A couple weekends ago we removed the cab. I thought it was going to be really difficult. I thought I would need a big group of my strongest guy friends to help. I wasn't even sure, exactly, HOW we were going to get it off the frame.

We made sure to remove as much as we could to make the cab as light as possible. We removed the doors, the gas tank, the steering column, the bench seat, and most of the dash. I had 3 guys and 1 girlfriend to help....and it went a lot smoother than I thought!

We pushed the truck out of the garage. Unbolted the 4 bolts holding the cab to the frame (use an impact wrench. It's SOOOO much easier). We then put 3 4x4's under the cab to lift it up, then slid the cab (very very gently) down the 4x4's and off the frame. Then the guys each took a side and were able to simple carry the cab over to the side yard where the cab will rest for the time being. The cab is being stored on pallets and covered with a giant tarp.

The guys did most of the heavy lifting but it was very exciting! It feels like now that the engine is out I can really get down to cleaning and removing other parts. Removing the engine was surprisingly smooth and easy. No issues getting bolts off or even pulling out the transmission with the engine.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13004960886036871295noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6077543663178858646.post-43902335657854842082014-03-12T16:53:00.000-07:002014-03-12T16:53:31.035-07:00It's About FamilyA lot of people have been telling me this whole project of restoring my dad's truck is a bad idea.
It's a waste of time and money.
It'll take years to complete.

My response to that?

I don't care. I don't care what they THINK is a bad idea or a waste of my time. I knew going into this project that it was going to take some time and a bit of money. But that's not the point of this whole project. The point is that I've watched this truck sit in my backyard for 20 years, always thinking one day I will work on it, and one day i'll get to drive it.
To me...it's not about how much money I put into it, or how many years it takes. To me, it's about my dad, my grandpa, my grandma, even my mom.
Fixing this truck makes me feel closer to them.

It's about family. Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13004960886036871295noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6077543663178858646.post-75041143218258179242013-08-22T15:49:00.000-07:002013-08-22T15:49:21.529-07:00A brief (and delayed) updateIt has been a while since I last posted and I am happy to report.........the project is at a standstill. We've gotten all of the front end taken off and have determined the engine is shit (not really surprised there). I've been tossing around the idea of replacing the engine anyway because the one in there now is a straight 6, and i'd rather have a V6 or V8, so i've started my shopping. There are so many engines out there for sale, some cheap, most not. It's a lot of work since i'm not too knowledgeable on engines. But i'm having fun with it, which is important.

I have so much to learn.

Until next time. Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13004960886036871295noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6077543663178858646.post-89394179426853252602013-06-17T23:53:00.000-07:002013-06-17T23:53:10.727-07:00A New HomeAfter sitting in the backyard for 24 years, the truck has been moved! With the help of a couple friends and their diesel truck the Chevy was pulled from the backyard, out the side gate, down the street, around the house and backed down the driveway into the garage. Actually, I should say it was pushed down the driveway by three, and me behind the wheel steering it into the garage. That was fun.
The task went a lot smoother than I imagined. The Chevy wasn't running under it's own power. The brakes didn't even work! But the E-Brake did. Oh and remember that ONE tire that would NOT inflate? We tried it again and the tire held air this time. We could not figure out why it decided to hold air now. It made the job of moving the truck a lot easier though.

As we were backing the truck down the driveway we were all kind of skeptical of the truck fitting in the garage in the first place. The house was built sometime in the 40's or 50's, and the garage door is a lot smaller than standard garage doors today. Add to that, the amount of stuff stored in our garage takes up a lot of space. Did I mention we had to do a thorough deep cleaning of the garage before we could even THINK about moving the truck in there? The garage was piled with stuff from years and years and years of storage. But the truck fit! With inches to spare.

It was a great accomplishment, getting the truck out of the backyard. Now the garage will be it's home for however many years.

I was a little skeptical at first because each tire was a good 3-4 inches sunk into the dirt. But to my surprise, the tires were filling.....until we get to the last one - the front passenger-side tire. It was losing air as fast as it was going in. There was no way it was going to stay inflated. There's always one.

Next, we moved onto removing the camper shell. There were only 4 bolts holding the camper shell to the bed of the truck and thankfully those came off without a hitch. But that thing was heavy as hell! And i'm not much help in the upper body strength department but my boyfriend is and we eventually got it pulled off. And it looks so much better without it!

Our second day of working consisted of removing the bench seat. This thing was so ratty. And since mice had obviously gotten into it (remember the dead mouse I found?!) there was mouse poop everywhere! And it smelled really bad. Just like the camper, there were only 4 bolts holding the bench to the floor of the cab. Simple right? Wrong. One bolt head was completly stripped! And being that it's super old and a little rusted it would not budge for nothing. What finally got it was taking a flathead screwdriver and a mallet to it to try and get some space between the bolt head and the bottom. Then we could get a better grip with the vice scrips and unscrew it. There's always ONE!!

Again, only being held on by 4 bolts.

Side note: I wish my 2006 Scion tC was this simple to work on; rust and age aside. I mean, this truck has no computer systems, and there's so much space unde the hood! But more on that later.

Back to the bumper guard. So 4 bolts and one has to give us problems. Of course. And it's one that's UNDER the truck. But with lots of man power (thanks boyfriend) we got it loose.

There's. always. One.

Until next time...
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13004960886036871295noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6077543663178858646.post-92059824039628412632013-05-31T09:37:00.000-07:002013-05-31T09:37:32.618-07:00My first blog post.....ever

Passed down from my Nonni Joe (mom's dad), to my dad, and now to me. Through this blog I will document the restoration process starting from dismantleing all the way to the very end. I know it doesn't look too great right now;
it's been sitting in that exact spot for 24+ years sinking into the dirt, collecting leaves and various animals and insects (yes animals. I found a mouse carcass when cleaning out the cab, and yes, I screamed. EW!), but it will look perfect one day. That I know for sure.

This truck and I have a long, long journey ahead of us. It will be frustrating at times; I will want to quit and give up probably most of the time. But I won't. I will do it. I will do it for my Nonni Joe, for my Dad, and for me. Because in the end (in several years no doubt), it will be totally worth it.

Until next time...Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13004960886036871295noreply@blogger.com3
